Following a recent string of gun-related tragedies over the past year, few people were surprised by President Obama's efforts to enact legislation aimed at reforming the nation's gun laws.

Of course, equally unsurprising was the deep division of opinions regarding both the effectiveness and necessity of such legislation, which included a proposal to ban some semi-automatic weapons resembling military assault rifles. In addition, the bill had also recently introduced a number of amendments, the most significant of which aimed to expand background checks for gun buyers at firearms shows and on the Internet.

As a result, prices for both firearms and ammunition have spiked over the past few months along with demand, as worried consumers began to stockpile the products.

Sporting-goods retailer�Cabela's (NYSE: CAB  ) , for instance, noted a 12% year-over-year increase in comparable-store sales last quarter, largely on the heels of a "surge in the sale of firearms and ammunition." What's more, the outfitter also stated that more than one in five firearms purchasers last quarter were to brand-new Cabela's customers, indicating just how many folks came out to buy guns and ammo before any new laws might have made it more difficult.

    The Mexican restaurant chain has enjoyed a lot of growth and is a star player in the casual dining sector. It has never had a stock split. Management has frequently scoffed at the idea of a stock split, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Until about a year ago, Apple said the same thing. Autozone Inc.     AutoZone is a retailer and a U.S. distributor of automotive replacement parts and accessories. The company has had two 2-for-1 splits in its history, in 1992 and 1994, so it certainly is due. Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) - Share price: $421.54
    Growing from a by-mail DVD rental and subscription service into a full-blown Internet-based TV network has pushed NFLX to impressive heights. Netflix had one 2-for-1 split back in 2004. But the dramatic fall of the stock back in 2011 - from just over $300 to $50 - no doubt has kept the company from pulling the trigger on a stock split.     I'll admit that when it comes to Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD  ) , I'm not a big fan of the company. I see its death spiral as a slow, painful one for investors. It's too bad a new marketing campaign for its new Kmart shipping services isn't the norm, because it's the type of promo that makes the once venerable retailer seem relevant again.

    Slow but steady -- that seems to be the new mantra here on Wall Street. The Dow Industrials and the S&P 500 plowed further into record territory on Friday. The catalyst for today's advance was the monthly jobs report, which showed the total number of people employed finally topped the 2008 peak it hit just before the Great Recession took hold. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 88 points, the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) rose 9, and the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) gained 25 points. Financial stocks helped lead the advance. Goldman Sachs (GS) and American Express (AXP) both gained more than 2 percent. Bank of America (BAC) rose 1 percent on reports that it's in talks with the Justice Department to settle another set of probes into the bank's handling of mortgages leading up to and during the financial crisis. News reports say the company could pay more than $12 billion, which is more than it earned in all of 2013. But this could allow Bank of America to finally put this long-running problem behind it. Its stock has been virtually flat over the past 6 months. Amazon (AMZN) posted a strong gain for second straight day, rising 2 percent, on indications that it's about to enter the smartphone business. And Sears (SHLD) gained nearly 2 percent on a Reuters report that the company's chairman has held talks with outgoing Ford (F) CEO Alan Mulally, sparking rumors that he might head the retailer's turnaround effort. Elsewhere, Hertz (HRZ) drove into a ditch, sliding 9 percent after saying it will restate earnings from 2011 through 2013 because of accounting issues. Diamond Foods (DMND) fell 11 percent.     If you take a look at the chart for Acorn Energy, you'll notice that this stock has started to spike higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $3.66 a share. Shares of ACFN are now quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ACFN if it manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.24 to $4.64 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 344,835 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ACFN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.50 to $6 a share. Any high-volume move above $6 will then put its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $6.35 to $6.68 a share into range for shares of ACFN.

    Traders can look to buy ACFN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $3.66 a share, or right around some major support at $3.21 a share. One could also buy ACFN off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    As the second-largest tobacco company in the world, $137 billion cigarette company Philip Morris International (PM) has the whole "sin stock" thing down pat. PM owns nearly a third of the ex-China market for cigarettes, with some of the most popular global brands under its corporate umbrella. At the top of the pack is the firm's flagship Marlboro label, which accounts for more than a third of volume. Other brands include L&M, Philip Morris, and Parliament.

     

    But don't mistake PM for the company manufacturing Marlboro cigarettes here in the U.S. -- this firm, which spun out from Altria (MO) in 2008, is 100% ex-U.S. That's actu! ally spectacular positioning, because it means that PM is the part of legacy Altria's tobacco business that's actually still growing. At the same time that cigarette sales here in the U.S. die a slow death, PM's emerging market business is seeing quick growth rates. The combination of a sticky product (consumers don't tend to switch cigarette brands often), and premium positioning with Marlboro means that PM earns thick net profit margins (28% last year) for its trouble.

     

    The strong dollar has been a thorn in PM's side in the last few years -- since the firm earns revenues in local currencies and then reports in dollars, any upside in the greenback presents currency risk. Even so, growth in the firm's core emerging markets has outpaced the dollar's climb in this environment. Another mitigating factor is PM's huge 4.5% dividend yield -- with low interest rates likely to persist for some time, that yield should look increasingly attractive as time wears on.

Although rail stocks have come a bit off their highs, particularly the eastern operators, Wall Street still remains pretty bullish on the prospects of rail continuing to take share from trucking. With that, an in-line quarter for CSX (NYSE:CSX) isn't likely to change the story much in either direction.     Looking forward, the picture for ConAgra still looks uncertain. On one hand, ConAgra has responded to its recent weakness by offering more promotions and boosting its advertising and marketing in an effort to capture more customers.     JP Morgan analysts downgraded packaged foods manufacturer Kellogg Company (K) on Tuesday as they believe the company will have issues meeting top line expectations.

    The analysts downgraded K from “Neutral” to “Underweight” and see shares reaching $60. This price target suggests a slight downside to the stock’s Monday closing price of $60.98.

    Kellogg shares were down 82 cents, or 1.34%, during early morning trading on Tuesday. The stock is up 7.75% year-to-date.

    Big earnings movers: Tiffany & Co. (NYSE: TIF) reported better-than-expected earnings and revenues and raised its guidance slightly, but even posting a new 52-week high early could hold the stock from dropping about 1.3% today. Brown Shoe Co. Inc. (NYSE: BWS) also posted good earnings, but followed with slightly lower EPS guidance and the stock lost about 9%, trading around $21.60 in a 52-week range of $13.68 to $24.78. Another footwear maker, DSW Inc. (NYSE: DSW) put up good results and raised its guidance as well, sending shares up more than 9% to a new 52-week high of $88.73 in the mid-morning.
