Best Oil Stocks To Buy Right Now

Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) has the type of one-year stock chart that dreams are made of, marching steadily higher with very little volatility. Moving stuff around the country is a great business, and one that appears to produce the type of steady returns we'd all like to see in our portfolios. Unfortunately for holders of Union Pacific stock, Warren Buffett may be angling to spoil all of that.

A few weeks ago, Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK-A  ) BNSF Railway Co. announced that it would be launching a pilot program to test the viability of transitioning locomotives from burning diesel to running on liquefied natural gas, or LNG. Despite the significant cost of retrofitting BNSF's 6900 engines to accept the alternate fuel source, the comparable amount of energy available from LNG to a gallon of diesel is dramatically less expensive. Such a change would completely upend the rail industry and force holders of Union Pacific stock to evaluate how such a change might impact their shares.

Many American oil and gas investors are probably familiar with the major large and small cap players in the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, but few American investors are probably familiar withthe active players further to the north in theoil and gas rich Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Albertawith small cap stocks like Alexander Energy Ltd (CVE: ALX), Renegade Petroleum Ltd (CVE: RPL) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) along with large cap Suncor Energy Inc (NYSE: SU) being among thosepumping out their share of noteworthy news lately. I should point out thatCanada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the controversialoil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation actually stretches into) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also containing substantial production and reserves. Moreover and excluding the oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

In August, Apache (APA) announced that it agreed to sell a 33% stake in its Egyptian oil and gas business to Sinopec (SHI) for $3.1 billion. This price equated to $34 per barrel of proved reserves, or a significant premium to the valuation of Apache common of about $15 per barrel prior to the announcement of the transaction. Given the recent political turmoil in Egypt, we were pleasantly surprised at the higher

The company is also cozying up to the idea of using natural gas to fuel hydraulic fracking operations, an approach that exploration and production companies including Apache (NYSE: APA  ) and Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) are already using.

    Unrest in your portfolio?
Aside from the fear of higher gas prices, investors might be interested to know what kind of effect this will have on their portfolios. For producers that don't have assets in Egypt, this could potentially provide a little boost because they might get a slightly higher premium for their product. Then again, there are a couple companies that could be hurt by production losses from their Egyptian assets.

Advisors' Opinion:

In Pioneer Natural Resources' case, the company reported that its EURs in the Permian Basin continue to average 1 million BOE in the Wolfcamp B zone. That's a lot of oil and gas. In fact, it is well above what companies in the Bakken Shale and Eagle Ford Shale are seeing these days. For example, the average EUR of Continental Resources' (NYSE: CLR  ) oil wells in the Bakken Shale is just 603,000 BOE. Meanwhile, Devon Energy's (NYSE: DVN  ) top wells targeting the Eagle Ford shale in DeWitt County and Lavaca Texas see EURs of 850,000-950,000 BOE and 400,000-500,000 BOE, respectively.

    1. Risk for new projects is lower
The ability to effectively tap shale resources is the culmination of two drilling techniques almost 100 years in the making, starting with the test of the first horizontally drilled well in Texas back in 1929. When horizontally drilled wells are combined with hydraulic fracturing -- a well completion technique pioneered by Mitchell Energy (now part of Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN  ) ) back in the mid '90s -- we are able to effectively drill into a tight gas formation, break the shale, and extract the gas.

What: Shares of energy service provider Newpark Resources (NYSE: NR  ) jumped 17% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Revenue was up 7.7%, to $283 million in the first quarter, and net income jumped 11.1%, to $17.4 million, or $0.18 per share. Analysts only expected $278 million in revenue, and earnings of $0.17 per share, and the slight beat was enough to send shares higher. It didn't hurt that the report was accompanied by a $50 million share repurchase plan, which indicates that management is bullish on the company's long-term future.
