Top Trucking Stocks To Own For 2014

On Tuesday, an event took place that added momentum to the massive rollout of "Made in America" fuel...   Ford Motor announced it will begin offering compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems for one of the country's best-selling trucks – its F-150 pickup. It will be the first half-ton pick-up truck capable of running on natural gas.   For years, I've been telling readers how the low price and abundance of natural gas will help it become a major transportation fuel. The massive cost savings has led industry giants like Wal-Mart, Fed-Ex, UPS, Waste Management, Coca-Cola, and AT&T to switch their trucking fleets from diesel to natural gas   But natural gas isn't just replacing diesel as a fuel anymore. It's beginning to replace gasoline. Drivers are craving it. And it could lead to huge gains for the companies that can take advantage of it.

John Mone/APSouthwest Airlines aircraft technicians install newer, skinnier seats on a 737 at the carrier's headquarters in Dallas. It's not your imagination. There really is a tighter squeeze on many planes these days. The big U.S. airlines are taking out old, bulky seats in favor of so-called slimline models that take up less space from front to back, allowing for five or six more seats on each plane. The changes, covering some of the most common planes flown on domestic and international routes, give the airlines two of their favorite things: More paying passengers, and a smaller fuel bill because the seats are slightly lighter. It's part of a trend among the airlines to view seats as money-makers, not just pieces of furniture. Add a few inches of legroom and airlines can charge more for tickets. Take away a few inches and they can fit more seats on the plane. Some passengers seem to mind the tighter squeeze more than others. The new seats generally have thinner padding. And new layouts on some planes have made the aisles slightly narrower, meaning the dreaded beverage cart bump to the shoulder happens more often. And this is all going on in coach at a time when airlines are spending heavily to add better premium seats in the front of the plane. Whether the new seats are really closer together depends on how you measure. By the usual measure, called "pitch," the new ones are generally an inch closer together from front to back as measured at the armrest. Airlines say you won't notice. And the new seats are designed to minimize this problem. The seats going onto Southwest's 737s have thinner seatback magazine pockets. Passengers on Alaska Airlines (ALK) will find slightly smaller tray tables. United's new seats put the magazine pocket above the tray table, getting it away from passengers' knees. And seat-makers saved some space with lighter-weight frames and padding. This allows airlines to claim that passengers have as much above-the-knee "personal sp

US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) has also favored the A321 recently, and has the largest A321 fleet in the world. All of its 16 narrowbody deliveries this year will be A321s, which have 30% more seats than the Boeing 737-400s that are being retired. Meanwhile, Alaska Air (NYSE: ALK  ) is following Southwest by moving to new "slimline" seats that will allow it to add six seats to each of its 737-800 aircraft and nine seats to each 737-900 aircraft. Moreover, while Alaska currently operates a variety of Boeing 737 models, the vast majority of its future orders are for the largest variant. These new aircraft, which seat 181 passengers, are replacing older planes with as few as 124 seats each.

Offshore drillers like Ensco (ESV), Seadrill (SDRL) and Rowan (RDC) are sinking today, but shares of Transocean (RIG) have managed to stay afloat.

    AFP

Transocean has gained 0.9% to $41.85 at 1:22 p.m. today, even as Ensco has fallen 1.3% to $50.89, Seadrill has plunged 3.1% to $34.87 and Rowan has dipped 0.8% to $30.89.

Transocean’s gain comes a day after the offshore driller fell 4.3% following its better-than-expected earnings release. Howard Weil’s Dave Wilson explains why Transocean fell yesterday:

As we expected, the quarterly performance was discounted heavily as the outlook really did not change. Even the achievement on the revenue efficiency front, hitting the highest level since early 2008, which we thought was great, did not carry much weight with investors. At the end of the day, the Company still has roughly 20 floaters that are set to roll off contract in both 2014 and 2015 (0 per year), which in this environment will leave investors cautious on the name.

The focus now is on Transocean’s ability to offload some of its rigs, explains Cowen’s J.B. Lowe:

Transocean’s next step in the company’s multi-stage process of divesting non-core assets and high-grading the company’s fleet is the creation of Caledonia Offshore. Transocean announced Monday that it will create its new entity with the purpose of divesting its North Sea semisubmersile rigs. The Sedco 704, Sedco 711, Sedco 712, Sedco 714, Transocean John Shaw, Transocean Prospect, GSF Artic III and the J.W. McLean which combined have an average age of over 30 years old (from build not upgrade) will all be part of the new entity. On the company’s 1Q14 earnings conference call, Transocean set the time line for the creation of Caledonia Offshore for 2H14 but said that the company would decide at a later point whether it would look to sell the company to a direct public or private buyer, spin the company or IPO.<

Yesterday, small cap geothermal stock U.S. Geothermal Inc (NYSEMKT: HTM) produced a geyser of a return when it surged 26.79%, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock verses the performance of other geothermal stocks like small cap Ormat Technologies, Inc (NYSE: ORA) and mid cap Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN).First of all, I should mention there are some other geothermal stocks out there like Alterra Power Corp (CVE: AXY) and Ram Power Corp (TSE: RPG) who have their primary listing on Canadian exchanges with secondary ones on the OTCmeaning they may not be a good deal for American investors or easy to invest in. Second, U.S. Geothermal Inc itself is a good geothermal proxy as itsfocused on developing, owning, and operating clean, sustainable electric power from geothermal energy resources and itsoperating geothermal power projects at Neal Hot Springs, Oregon; San Emidio, Nevada; and Raft River, Idaho plus El Ceibillo, an advanced stage, geothermal prospect located within a 24,710 acre energy rights concession area near Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.
