Best Consumer Companies To Buy Right Now

As we enter the fall, Moneyshow's Jim Jubak is looking to the technology sector to see whether it can succeed in leading the market higher.

Right now, I'd argue that technology stocks count. I know it's not a sector that you've probably been paying a whole lot of attention to, but we're about to go into the strongest part of the year for technology stocks. The strong part of the year, seasonally, tends to run from like, oh, October 10 to early January. It's based on the fact that there are a lot of technology sales at Christmas. You get a lot of people buying electronics. You get a lot of companies using up their allocations, so buying equipment or at least placing orders for the equipment before the money vanishes with the end of the year. You know how this works if you've ever worked in a business where you had to buy stuff. Your budget expires. You got to spend it. So, this is usually the time when technology starts to do best as technology investors anticipate better earnings. Stocks tend to start to drop off in January with the Consumer Electronics Show and a move toward a weaker set of seasonal numbers. So right now, the question is, are you going to get numbers from companies like Cisco, and Qualcomm, and Intel, and Apple, strong enough to move the whole market, because if you're looking for leadership in the US market, it's hard to find a place where it's going to come from.

Obviously, the big news for Smithfield during the quarter came from Shuanghui International's offer to buy out the company for $34 per share. The $4.7 billion offer has raised some nationalistic concerns, as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. will have to approve the merger, but Smithfield CEO Larry Pope said last month when the deal was announced that it believes the deal won't have an effect on the company's operations. In fact, the combination of China's largest meat processor and the world's biggest pork producer could produce a formidable opponent to industry rivals. In particular, Chinese pork producer Zhongpin (NASDAQ: HOGS  ) will inevitably find itself under pressure if the deal goes through, as Shuanghui puts itself in a stronger competitive position in the industry.

Yesterday after the market closed, small cap audio stock Skullcandy Inc (NASDAQ: SKUL) reported earnings and began rising in after hours trading, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with the performance of other audio stocks like mid cap Harman International Industries Inc (NYSE: HAR) and small caps Koss Corporation (NASDAQ: KOSS) and Parametric Sound Corp (NASDAQ: PAMT). I should mention that inlate 2012, Skullcandy had the dubious distinction of being the market most shorted stock (see: Long Live the Shorts or the Short Squeeze? SKUL, AM & UBNT) with shortinterest of 86.47% and there would still be a lot of shorts out there who might start feeling the squeeze (Note: SKUL is at least no longer on the HighShortInterest.com list)

Koss Corporation (KOSS) was no different because after looking over its balance sheet and profitability numbers I found substantial NOLs, little debt and reasonable profitability levels which usually are good signs that the company may be a good investment if the company is undervalued. This however is not an article about a company that I will ever invest in due to it being a grossly overvalued, dying company, which has major management concerns.

I do not mention these things to discourage you from international stocks. I have been purchasing BP (BP) between $39-$43, and I will eventually purchase Anheuser-Busch (BUD), Nestle (NSRGY.PK), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), and two or three other international companies when the stars line up. My point is that you should not feel an obligation to own international stocks simply for diversification's sake. If you find a good international stock with a business model you understand and it trades at an attractive price, then great. You should buy it. But owning international stocks does not have to be a necessary part of your strategy. Despite what Mankiw advises in the New York Times, you can build a diversified collection of "global stocks" simply by investigating where certain American multinationals generate the bulk of their sales and earnings.

And that, unmistakably, is a brand. Although the value of a brand is intangible and cannot be measured in dollars, it is one of the most valuable assets a company can have. This is what differentiates a product from Coca-Cola (KO), Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), Nestle (NSRGY.PK) or McDonald's (MCD) from just another unknown manufacturer of these very much essential goods and services. In my eyes, brands are as good as a promise to consumers, which differentiates the product from the rest, and promises that the standard of that certain product will be much better than that of another manufacturer. Without this brand that people trust in and are loyal to, there will not be substantial profits and future growth for the company. Do you think Warren Buffett would have bought out Heinz (HNZ) without its world-famous brand name? Definitely not! It would be as good as just another ketchup brand left on the shelf.
