Another non-cyclical consumer goods player that insiders are active in here is Blyth (BTH), which designs and markets home fragrance products and decorative accessories, as well as weight management products, nutritional supplements and energy drinks. Insiders are buying this stock into weakness, since shares are down by 22% so far in 2013.

Blyth has a market cap of $193 million and an enterprise value of $156 million. This stock trades at a reasonable valuation, with a price-to-sales of 0.19 and a price-to-book of 4.21. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $172.96 million and its total debt is $127.98 million. This stock currently sports a dividend yield of 1.6%.

From a technical perspective, BTH is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has recently pulled back after trading just above its 200-day moving average at $14.60 a share to its intraday low of $12.05 a share. That pullback is pushing shares of BTH very close to its 50-day moving average of $11.48 a share. If that level holds off this pullback, then shares of BTH could present a solid buying opportunity.

If you're in the bull camp on BTH, then look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above is 50-day at $11.48 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $13.09 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 287,505 shares. If we get that move soon, then BTH will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $14.60 to $15.69 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $17 to $20 into range for shares of BTH.

    4. INVESTING CASH WISELY: Is the company using that cash flow in a wise manner? (a) avoiding macho or bleary-eyed acquisitions; (b) reinvesting in research and development, marketing and other critical areas in the company.

  • [By Philip Springer]

The U.S. economy grew, sort of, at a miniscule annual rate of 0.1 percent in the first quarter, according to the Commerce Dept. This preliminary reading, the first of three, was far below pessimistic expectations. This underperformance has occurred several times since the on-again, off-again recovery officially began in June 2009.

No wonder U.S. government bond yields have declined this year, contrary to most expectations, with the 10-year Treasury going from 3 percent to as low as 2.6 percent.

The first quarter’s economic weakness was attributed primarily to a 7.6 percent decline in exports, partly because of economic weakness in Europe and Asia. Poor weather, a favorite excuse for everything that went wrong during the winter, probably played a part in the export slump.

Also noteworthy, however: Business spending on equipment fell at a 5.5 percent annual pace in the first three months of the year, the largest decline since 2009.

Regardless of the causes, the tepid (to be generous) GDP reading marks a continuation of the still-sluggish growth in the current five-year economic expansion.

The report came right before the Federal Reserve announced that it is continuing to reduce, or taper, its bond purchases to $45 billion a month, from the original $85 billion. The Fed says it’s starting to see faster growth after the harsh winter.

The Fed also maintained its guidance on short-term interest rates, saying they would remain near zero for a “considerable time” after the bond-buying program ends later this year. The current expectation is that the Fed won’t start to raise interest rates until well into 2015.

However, evidence of a possible economic rebound came the next day, May 2. The federal government jobs report for April showed a jump of 288,000, with a sharp decline in the official unemployment rate to 6.3 percent.

Meanwhile, corporate profits continue to grow, albeit modest

For fiscal year 2013, Enbridge Energy reported a decline in net income. I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ: CLNE  ) would close higher on the week. The provider of natural gas fueling solutions for transportation has been posting narrowing losses, and Wall Street was eyeing a 35% surge in revenue. The company was a solid report. Revenue came in a little light, but bottom-line results improved nicely. Shares of Clean Energy Fuels moved slightly higher on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market had a strong run this week, fueled be encouraging economic news. Secondary stocks led the way, with the Nasdaq soaring 1.7% on the week. The Dow managed to close just 1% higher. I was right. My final call was for Compass Diversified Holdings (NYSE: CODI  ) to beat Wall Street's quarterly profit target. The investor in several middle-market companies has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.36 a share during the quarter, but Compass Diversified failed to beat the prognosticators. I was wrong.

Two out of three? I'll take it. That makes me eight of nine over the past three weeks.

    52-Week Range: $1.42-$3.74

    Tuesday's Volume: 106,000

This stock has been uptrending for the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.62 to its intraday high of $3.58. During that move, shares of RWC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move is quickly pushing shares of RWC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if RWC manages to take out its 52-week high at $3.74 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RWC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $3.20 or its 50-day at $3.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.74 with volume that hits near or above 74,659 shares.
